My name is Maryam Hagi Mahamud. I worked at SOCOPA for 6 months. I worked as both a Teaching Assistant for the Primary classes and also for the Secondary classes. I also had the opportunity to teach GCSE Maths. I was able to bring and develop useful practical and transferable skills useful for working environments. Working at SOCOPA has been exceedingly rewarding as I was able to support SOCOPA’S vision which is to provide support and services for range of nationalities from the black and ethnic minority including asylum seekers, refugees and new arrivals (BME) in Leicester. Mr. Abdikayf Farah, the founder and executive manager comments about SOCOPA: “Since we began in 2005 we have always worked with our local schools, helping families engage and integrate as well as educating the school about our culture.” This shows how important SOCOPA is as the organisation brings people together and is based on learning and improving communities through various projects such as the youth sessions.

Dear Abdikayf,

“On behalf of Harriet and myself, just to say thank you once again for organising such a great meeting yesterday. We were extremely taken by the warm and generous reception you and the community gave us, and we both found it an extremely enlightening and useful session. We’re both very grateful to you for organising, and to the whole community for giving up their afternoon to welcome us. Please do pass on our most sincere gratitude and thanks to your colleagues.Harriet has of course promised to return to Leicester, so I hope we shall see you again soon.

With all best wishes,

Claudia”

I am thankful to the Somali Community Parents Association who helped me in passing my driving theory test. They provided me with a friendly environment. The tutor was kind and polite who not only guided me well but also gave a boost to my morale. I appreciate that they gave me individual attention to pass my test. I hope they will continue their good efforts so that they will be a well known centre in Leicester.

“I appreciate the help I received from the Somali Community Parents Association; they were polite and very positive with a great attitude towards the participants. SOCOPA helped me with my theory test; they booked it for me and gave me the support and confidence to pass it, as well as providing me with free driving lessons for my practical test which I took a week after I has passed my theory test. I also passed my practical exam and I wouldn’t have done it without the help from the Somali Community Parents Association.

“I’m Bana ali. I took part in the driving theory course and have now passed my theory test. I am now in the middle of 15 practical driving lessons and the Somali Community Parents Association to thank for offering me this opportunity.

Now I am also working for AUK assessment as the lessons and the help offered helped me get a job. I thank all those who helped make this happen and I hope to get other people to take up the opportunities offered by SOCOPA.”

“I, Mr Bashir Abdirahman, took part in a driving theory class and passed. I am now taking driving practical lessons. I have booked my practical test which will take place on the 13th of August 2010. The Somali Community Parents Association has also helped me to enhance my CV writing skills and have helped me apply for jobs through the internet.

For the last 13 weeks I have participated in job search activities that were offered by SOCOPA. I am now on the right track to succeed and hope to pass my driving test in the near future, which will enable me to get mobility, come of benefits and get a decent job which lasts.

I am grateful for this opportunity and hope other people in the community will also benefit.

Bashir Abdirahman, 48.
